The immune system is weakened by lack of sleep, so it is important to sleep sufficiently, especially during the cold season, i.e. at least 7 hours a night, to prevent a cold. A midday nap can also be helpful here. Stress has a similar influence as lack of sleep.

This should also be avoided if possible to reduce the risk of catching a cold. The immune system can be activated by alternating showers during the day. For example, after a warm shower, the whole body should be showered cold in order to stimulate the blood circulation.

However, this should not be done in the evening, because the stimulated blood circulation can cause restless sleep. Regular sauna visits also activate the immune system and are good for preventing colds, especially in winter. Since many diseases, including the common cold, are transmitted via the hands, frequent hand washing helps to prevent a cold.

Wearing finger gloves when in public also reduces the risk of the pathogens being transmitted. A nasal rinsing in the evening can help to flush out the pathogens that may be in the nose. To do this, the nasal mucous membranes are rinsed with a nasal shower, either with a ready-made mixture or with a homemade saline solution, and moistened at the same time.

Appropriate clothing is also advisable, especially in winter. If possible, cold feet and soaking of clothing should be avoided as potential risk factors for a cold.
