Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Symptoms of Deficiency

Cases of clinically apparent omega-3 fatty acid deficiency are rare but demonstrate the need for intake of these fatty acids.A young girl fed intravenously with very little omega-3 fatty acids developed visual difficulties and sensory neuropathy. These symptoms disappeared after more omega-3 fatty acids were supplied.
Scaling and bleeding skin and scalp inflammation, wound healing disorders, and growth disturbances have also been described.
