On movement
Lower abdominal pain on the left side can also occur depending on movement. The fact that the pain is movement-dependent, plus the type of pain and any other symptoms, can make it easier to diagnose the disease causing it. Initially, movement-dependent pain in the lower abdomen should make one think of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Skeletal or muscular disorders can in some cases also cause pain in the lower abdomen and are usually motion-dependent. On the other hand, if pain occurs during sporting activity, the phenomenon known as lateral stinging can also cause pain in the lower abdomen on the left side. Flatulence can also cause extremely unpleasant pain in the lower abdomen on the left side.
Depending on the movement, these winds may be “stuck” in the intestine and cause movement-related pain. Pain in the lower abdomen, which can occur exclusively or intensified when walking, can be caused by various diseases. Tense back or pelvic muscles can also be responsible for the complaints as well as organic causes.
In some cases, “tightly seated” winds in the intestine can also trigger pain in the lower abdomen when walking. If the pain only occurs when walking, it can also be caused by side stings. If, in addition to the lower abdominal pain on the left side, this pain radiates into the leg, it may be a disease of the locomotor system or a cause of the nervous system.
Muscular tension of the back can affect nerves in such a way that the pain radiates into the leg. This phenomenon is also frequently described in the case of slipped discs. The probability of a herniated disc is especially increased when paralysis of the leg occurs in addition to the symptoms.
Lower abdominal pain on the left side of the woman
In addition to those causes that can be equally responsible for the occurrence of left lower abdominal pain in both men and women, some causes are specific to the female sex.Especially the female sexual organs can cause pain in the lower abdomen which can be felt on the left side. Women who suffer from lower abdominal pain on the left side can therefore suffer from diseases of the ovaries, fallopian tubes or the uterus, among other causes. Probably the most common cause of lower abdominal pain in women is pain that occurs during menstrual bleeding.
These pains can be individually stronger or weaker and are only in rare cases a cause for concern. The reason for the occurrence of these complaints is the detachment of the mucous membrane of the uterus, which is built up during the cycle and is shed during menstruation. Typical for this type of complaints are cramp-like or pulling pains in the abdomen, which can occur on the right or left side.
Ovarian cysts can also be painful. These can occur as part of a disease or in isolation. Normally, cysts do not cause pain.
However, if they become so large that neighboring structures are affected, severe pain can occur. Especially if sport was done shortly before the pain or other movements were carried out with verve, a stem-turned ovary should be considered. The lack of blood supply resulting from this clinical picture causes very severe pain in the lower abdomen.
The clinical picture of endometriosis can also be painful. Here, the lining of the uterus is present in other parts of the body and causes discomfort. An ectopic pregnancy is also a possible cause of left-sided lower abdominal pain in women.
Inflammation of the female reproductive organs and the presence of sexually transmitted diseases should also be considered. Although not exclusively occurring in women, bladder infections are statistically much more frequent. These can sometimes lead to severe pain in the lower abdomen.
Especially if the discomfort when urinating increases, cystitis should be considered. If no other cause can be found, the presence of a tumor in the left lower abdomen is also a possible cause for left lower abdominal pain. In addition to many other physical changes, lower abdominal pain often occurs during pregnancy.
These pains can be caused by different factors, depending on the time within the pregnancy. In most cases, they are not a cause for concern and are harmless. This type of pain is usually caused by stretching of the uterus and reduced space available to other surrounding organs.
Later in the pregnancy, the child itself can also cause the pain through movement. So-called exercise contractions in the last trimester are also among the possible causes. Sometimes, however, lower abdominal pain can be an expression of various clinical pictures that require medical attention.
At the beginning of a pregnancy, the pain may be triggered by an ectopic pregnancy, as this is usually manifested by lower abdominal pain. A miscarriage can also manifest itself as lower abdominal pain and is usually accompanied by bleeding. In addition to these pregnancy-specific causes, other reasons for lower abdominal pain can of course also be responsible during pregnancy. If the pain is very severe, accompanied by vaginal bleeding or other symptoms, the gynaecologist should always be consulted.
