Operation | Torn ligament at elbow

Operation

As a rule, a torn ligament at the elbow heals well on its own if it occurs without accompanying symptoms. If there are also broken bones or torn ligaments, an operation is necessary in most cases. Depending on the extent of the damage, it may be necessary to restore the stability of the elbow with plates and screws.

These remain in the joint after the operation. In some cases, when the process of the ulna is very badly damaged and cannot be reconstructed, a slight instability of the joint remains after the operation. After the operation, the joint is immobilised with a splint for 6 to 8 weeks. After 4 weeks at the earliest, slight loading can be started. Depending on the degree of injury, sport should be avoided for up to 6 months.

Prophylaxis

A torn ligament in the elbow joint cannot be prevented. Mostly in sports it is the jerky, inconsiderate movements that lead to a rupture of the ligamentous apparatus. Even a violent impact on the elbow cannot be prevented. In order to minimize the risk of sports injuries, an intensive warm-up is important, during which the ligaments are stretched extensively.
