Penile Cancer: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that can be caused by penile carcinoma (penile cancer):

Neoplasms and tumor diseases (N00-N99).

  • Metastasis (“formation of daughter tumors”), especially to the following organs:
    • Lymphogenic (lymph nodes; relatively early metastasis).
    • Hematogenous (“in the bloodstream”) metastasis to lungs, liver, bones or CNS.

Highest metastatic tendency: sarcomatoid, pseudoglandular and basaloid carcinomasLowest metastatic tendency: verrucous and warty subtypes of penile squamous cell carcinoma.

  • Recurrence (recurrence) of the disease (peak incidence: -2 years).

Prognostic factors

  • PT stage (depth of infiltration), malignancy grade, and microvascular invasion (lymphatic and venous) are the most important criteria for lymph node metastasis
