Pentoxifylline is commercially available in tablet form and as a solution for injection (generic). It has been approved in many countries since 1976. The original Trental is off the market.

Structure and properties

Pentoxifylline (C13H18N4O3, Mr = 278.3 g/mol) is an analog of theophylline. It is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water.

Effects

Pentoxifylline (ATC C04AD03) improves blood flow (microcirculation).

Indications

  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease
  • Trophic lesions (e.g., leg ulcers and gangrene)
  • Cerebral ischemic diseases
  • Circulatory disorders of the eye and hearing with degenerative vascular processes and decreased vision or hearing.
