Pheromones in perfume

A recurring trend is the promise that pheromones in perfume make a person smell irresistible and help him or her to be “smelled good” by everyone else. First of all, it is important to say that human pheromones are odorless messengers, so they would have no effect whatsoever in perfume. Furthermore, the effect of pheromones as well as their influence on sexual behavior is hardly understood until today.

Although it is assumed that pheromones can trigger a certain lust, it is also certain that other factors play a much more decisive role. Pheromones in perfume are therefore only a trick of the perfume manufacturers. Although there are various fragrances, such as vanilla fragrance, which obviously have a certain stimulating effect on certain people, the promise that pheromones in perfume make a person smell irresistibly is not scientifically proven. Moreover, even without perfume, each person emits their own pheromones, so pheromones in perfume are absolutely not necessary.

Are there pheromones for women?

Pheromones and their effects differ to some extent in women, but are also subordinate in the area of sexual behaviour. In a behavioral study, researchers found that a group of women living together tend to have their menstrual periods on the same days. It is suspected that women’s pheromones can induce synchronization of the menstrual cycle.

Other fragrances are released from secretion glands in the vagina, which can lower the heart and breathing rate in men during sleep and thus bring men to a calmer state. Trial participants of studies reported positive dream contents. In evolutionary terms, this has a considerable advantage, as the probability of the woman being abandoned by the man is reduced, which ultimately increased the woman’s chances of survival in earlier times.

Can the attractiveness be increased by pheromones?

Nowadays, there are some perfume suppliers who advertise with the irresistible effect of pheromones on the opposite sex. But if someone hopes to have no more problems with the search for a partner with the help of such a fragrance, unfortunately, must be disappointed. Despite the expensive prices and good marketing, there are still no studies that clearly prove that pheromones increase the attractiveness of a partner, which is why one should be critical of various pheromone products.

Although there are indications that pheromones are attractive, today’s science is not yet ready to say to what extent pheromones can increase a person’s attractiveness. As mentioned above, in some phases of the female cycle, the pheromone androstenone can even reduce a man’s attractiveness. Probably many other criteria, such as appearance and character, play a more important role in attractiveness and the pheromones are just remnants from old times.

However, since musk has pheromone-like structures and has a certain excitatory (aphrodisiac) effect, musk pheromones are often used in perfume, which are then supposed to trigger a stimulating effect in the person opposite. Nevertheless, many people seem to find the smell of musk unpleasant, so in this case the stimulating effect is cancelled out. In general, pheromones in perfume are a gallant trick to promise people that the perfume they buy will make them more attractive to other people.

However, it has been proven that the effect of pheromones is so small that their alleged effect in a perfume is negligible. The smell of pheromones is a mystery as many perfume manufacturers try to sell the smell of pheromones as a good smelling perfume that is supposed to help a person smell irresistible. In reality, however, pheromones are odorless. What is certain is that the smell of pheromones does not exist.

Therefore, it is not possible to capture this smell and make a perfume from it. The old saying “being able to smell a person well” seems to be closely linked to pheromones, as pheromones are obviously involved in our choice of partner, but there is no smell of pheromones that would make a patient smell irresistibly good. However, as pheromones are released via the sweat glands, the impression is often created that this sweat smell is associated with pheromones, and it is important to distinguish between the smell of sweat and the odorless pheromones. In general, pheromones can be thought of more like little invisible letters that convey information about one person to another without the smell of the pheromones playing a role.
