Physiotherapeutic measures | Burning and painful soles of the feet – Therapy

Physiotherapeutic measures

In physiotherapy, exercises are shown and performed to stabilize the arch of the foot in case of pain and burning in the sole of the foot. These are strengthening exercises for the arch of the foot, which the patient should continue to practice at home.

  • Balance exercises are also built in to further promote coordination in the foot, so that the foot can withstand all loads.
  • Foot reflex zone massages can be performed to loosen the muscles and tendons on the arch of the foot and promote blood circulation.
  • In addition to the therapy, the physiotherapist can examine the feet and shoes to identify deficiencies and make recommendations for pain and burning in the sole of the foot.

Burning and pain at night – possible causes

If the pain and burning on the sole of the foot occurs at night, this may indicate tarsal tunnel syndrome. Here the tibial nerve is compressed and can cause paresthesia. Paresthesias are nerve-like complaints such as stinging, numbness, tingling or even burning. The shin nerve not only supplies the calf, but also the foot area like the heel. Such a tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by overloading the lower legs – for example due to overweight or incorrect technique in running and jumping sports such as jogging or walking. Also it should be clarified medically whether behind the pain and the burning no further/other causal illness is found like rheumatism or diabetes mellitus.

Healing time

The duration of healing for pain and burning in the sole of the foot varies depending on the cause, therapeutic success and genetic factors. As with any healing, patience is required for pain and burning in the sole of the foot to give the healing process a chance. Especially if the strain has been on the foot for several months or years, healing can take place over a few days to months.

  • In case of a metabolic disorder, healing can be slowed down.
  • If the causes are purely due to overloading of the foot, healing can take place more quickly through continuous application of therapeutic measures. It is important here that the causes are diagnosed and treated.
