Pill and alcohol – is it compatible?

Introduction

The pill is a contraceptive taken orally (by mouth). A distinction is made between the classic pill and the mini-pill, although both work in a similar way and prevent the egg from implanting in the uterus. In addition, the pill prevents ovulation, so there should be no possibility of the egg coming into contact with the man’s sperm in the first place.

In order for the pill to be effective and safe, various interactions of the pill should be taken into account and, for example, care should be taken to ensure that the pill is always taken at the same times and that the pill is never forgotten or otherwise “lost” on any day. In general it must be said that the pill is a medicine which interacts with other medicines and active substances and therefore the effect of the pill may be lost under certain circumstances. Therefore it is important to pay attention to some things when taking the pill.

The pill and alcohol are well tolerated because the pill is not metabolized by the same enzymes as alcohol (ethanol). This means that you can take the pill and alcohol at the same time without having to worry that the pill will lose its effect or that the effect of the alcohol will be increased. But, pill and alcohol, is it really compatible?

The question is not whether the pill and alcohol are compatible, but rather whether the alcohol’s effects are compatible with the pill. Many patients do not feel well after extensive alcohol consumption and have to throw up. In this case it may be that the pill has not been in the body long enough and has not been able to develop its effect. In general, it can be said that, unlike antibiotics, the pill and alcohol are well tolerated because there are no interactions. Nevertheless, caution is required, especially in the case of excessive alcohol consumption, as this can also lead to forgetting to take the pill.
