Prednicarbate is commercially available as a cream, solution, and ointment (Prednitop, Prednicutan). It has been approved in many countries since 1990.
Structure and properties
Prednicarbate (C27H36O8, Mr = 488.6 g/mol) belongs to the class of potent glucocorticoids (class III). It is a non-halogenated prednisolone derivative. It exists as an odorless, white to yellowish-white, crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.
Effects
Prednicarbate (ATC D07AC18) has anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, immunosuppressive, and antipruritic properties. The effects are due to binding to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors.
Indications
For the treatment of inflammatory and noninfectious skin diseases.
Dosage
According to the drug label. The drug is applied locally thinly once or twice a day. Due to the possible adverse effects, it is recommended not to use the drug continuously for two to three weeks.

- Infectious diseases of the skin
- Vaccination reactions
- Skin ulcers
- Acne
- Rosacea
- Perioral dermatitis
It is not effective in these conditions, may cause adverse effects or worsening. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Interactions
Interactions with other drugs are not known to date.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions we irritation, redness, itching, infection, and dry skin. Skin lesions may occur with prolonged use, as with all topical glucocorticoids. Systemic side effects are expected only with improper use.
