Prognosis | Headaches during pregnancy

Prognosis

In general, the prognosis of headaches in pregnancy is good. Most women only suffer from headaches in the first three months of pregnancy. In the second and third trimester headaches are a much rarer phenomenon. Very often, the complaints can be brought under control by using the above mentioned home remedies. If necessary, painkillers can also be used, which usually prove to be sufficiently strong.

Prophylaxis

Headaches during pregnancy cannot always be avoided. The body undergoes major changes during this time and must first get used to the new circumstances and the change in hormone balance. However, the pregnant woman can prevent headaches to a certain extent by sleeping enough (at least 6-8 hours a day), drinking enough (2-3l a day), doing physical activity, for example going for a walk, and reducing stress factors in her everyday life.

She should also eat a balanced and healthy diet. It is better to eat several small meals spread over the day than to eat very large meals at once. These general rules of behavior can improve the well-being of pregnant women and prevent headaches.

Symptoms

Headaches during pregnancy can be of varying severity and occur in different parts of the head. During the first three months of pregnancy, headaches are often permanent, rather dull and pulling, and occur on both sides of the head. They are therefore most comparable to tension headaches.

Migraine headaches are much less common during pregnancy. Women who already suffered from migraines before pregnancy often have no problems whatsoever during pregnancy – especially if the migraine headache was previously dependent on the menstrual cycle.
