Prophylaxis | Pain in and around the ear

Prophylaxis

Earaches cannot always be prevented, especially if they are accompanied by an infection in the nasopharynx. However, the risk can be reduced with the right care or careful behaviour after a visit to the swimming pool. For example, cotton swabs should generally not be used to clean the ears.

A damp cloth is sufficient to gently clean the auricle and the beginning of the external auditory canal. This can reduce injuries and inflammation in the ear. You should also rinse your ears after a visit to a swimming pool, as the chlorine water can irritate the mucous membrane.

The water in the swimming pool also makes it easier for bacteria to enter, causing inflammation and pain in the ear. If you swim frequently, you should therefore wear a bathing cap.
