Side effects

Prospan Cough Syrup may cause allergic reactions. It is not known how often this happens. The allergic reactions may manifest themselves, for example, in the form of shortness of breath, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, reddening of the skin and itching.

The sorbitol contained in Prospan syrup may also be responsible for a laxative effect. The sugar alcohol accelerates bowel movements.

You can find out more about side effects in the package leaflet and from your doctor or pharmacist. If you develop side effects (including any not listed here or in the package leaflet), report them to your doctor or health care professional, or to your pharmacy.

Overdose

These overdose symptoms appear if you swallow more than three times the recommended daily dose. In such a case, be sure to consult a doctor.

Prospan cough syrup during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Do not take Prospan Cough Syrup during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is because the use of the cough expectorant in these phases of life has not been adequately studied.

Prospan cough syrup for babies

Parents should give Prospan Cough Syrup to babies (children under one year of age) only if they have discussed this with a doctor beforehand.

During the use of Prospan, one should carefully observe whether the baby develops (possibly dangerous) side effects. Particular attention should be paid to the occurrence of diarrhea and vomiting. The associated loss of fluid and salt can quickly become dangerous in such small children.

Prospan Cough Syrup is taken in the morning, at noon and in the evening (adults and adolescents over 12) or in the morning and in the evening (children). You can find the recommended dosage below. You can measure the correct single dose with the enclosed measuring cup. Before doing so, however, you should always shake the cough syrup bottle well.

Children from 6-12 years:

Effect

Prospan Cough Syrup contains a dry extract of ivy leaves as the active ingredient. Its ingredients have an antispasmodic effect on the bronchi, causing them to dilate. This makes it easier to breathe.

Prospan also acts as an expectorant: it helps to loosen and cough up mucus in the airways. Last but not least, it relieves cough irritation and inflammatory processes.

Overall, Prospan can thus effectively relieve the symptoms of irritable cough and bronchitis, for example.

Prospan Cough Syrup helps with acute respiratory inflammation with cough and chronic inflammatory bronchial diseases (e.g. cold with irritable cough, bronchitis).

If your symptoms last longer or you get shortness of breath, fever or bloody or purulent sputum, you should see a doctor immediately.

Interactions with other medications

Before using a new medication such as Prospan, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medications (e.g., cough suppressants, asthma or blood pressure medications) that you are already using or have recently used. This also applies to over-the-counter and herbal preparations.
