Pseudocroup: Therapy

General measures

  • Calming the child
  • Open window so that the child can breathe cool air; if necessary, stand close to the open window with the child dressed warmly
  • If the child can swallow, then cold drinks also help
  • Wet towels hung in the room also help to relieve (no positive effect on clinical outcome of viral croup)
  • Do not rub the child with cold ointments or other essential oils. These can aggravate the attack!
  • If severe respiratory distress occurs, the emergency physician must be called! In the meantime, elevation of the upper body is required. This reduces the edematous laryngeal (“belonging to the larynx“) mucosal swelling.

Emergency medical measures

  • Intubation (insertion of a tube (hollow probe) through the mouth or nose to secure the airway) – necessary only in very rare cases; exhaust drug therapy options beforehand
