Red shake mixture is not commercially available as a finished drug in many countries. It can be prepared at a pharmacy if needed. However, because it contains mercury sulfide, which is toxic and of environmental concern, it should not be used today. As a substitute, another shaking mixture, e.g. shaking brush white PM can be used, if necessary with the addition of disinfectants. Other shaking mixtures are also available as ready-to-use medicines.

Indications for use
Red shaking mixture has been used for shingles and chickenpox, among other conditions.
