Rhaponti Rhubarb

Products

The dry extract ERr 731 (femiLoges, formerly Phyto-Strol) from the roots of rhapontic rhubarb is commercially available in Germany in tablet form. It has not yet been approved in many countries.

Medicinal drug

The dried roots of rhapontic rhubarb are used as a medicinal raw material, Rhei rhapontici radix. The medicinal plant is also called Siberian rhubarb and is native to Central Asia.

Ingredients

The main constituents of the extract are the hydroxystilbenes rhaponticin and deoxyrhaponticin. They are structurally related to resveratrol.

Effects

The constituents from the exctract (ATC G02CP04) bind to estrogen receptor-β (ERβ) but not ERα. The mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated.

Indications

For the treatment of psychological and neurovegetative symptoms associated with menopause, eg:

  • Hot flashes, sweating.
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depressive moods
  • Anxiety

Dosage

According to the professional information. The tablets are usually taken once a day with a meal and always at the same time of day. Without a doctor’s prescription, the duration of therapy should not exceed 4 months.

Contraindications

Rhapontic rhubarb extract is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, during pregnancy and lactation, in unexplained genital bleeding, and in the presence and suspected presence of an estrogen-dependent tumor. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Antacids should not be taken concomitantly. A time interval of at least one hour is recommended.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions.
