Salivary Stone Disease (Sialolithiasis): Drug Therapy

Therapeutic targets

  • In case of bacterial infection: cure.
  • Pain relief
  • Relief of xerostomia (dry mouth)

Therapy recommendations

  • Symptomatic therapy
  • Antibiosis (antibiotic therapy).
    • Indications:
      • Acute bacterial sialadenitis
      • Chronic recurrent sialadenitis of the submandibular gland during the acute interval
      • Supportive curative to surgical intervention.
      • Endocarditis (endocarditis)-prone patients, regardless of the severity of infection.
      • Risk of exacerbation (significant worsening of symptoms) of a general disease.
      • Impaired immune defenses (eg, cytostatic or systemic corticosteroid therapy, immunosuppression), regardless of the severity of infection.
      • Postoperative persistent (continuing) inflammation despite adequate drainage (drainage of salivary fluid).
  • Sialagoga (drugs that promote saliva production) – Via excitation of the parasympathetic nervous system, they lead to increased saliva production.
