Showing Boundaries: Self Defense for Children and Women

Two out of five women have experienced sexual or physical violence in their lives. Every fourth woman is abused by her partner. But: counter-defense is useful, this has been shown by American as well as German studies. Up to 80 percent of attacks can be successfully repelled in this way. So it is not surprising that more and more women and children are taking courses in self-defense or assertiveness.

Large offer of self-defense courses

If you look for self-defense courses, you get an unmanageable offer of martial arts, such as:

  • Karate courses
  • Judo courses
  • Wendo
  • Taekwondo
  • Kickboxing
  • Freefight
  • Kung Fu

Each of these martial arts can contribute something to the fact that someone who trains regularly, also feels safer in the face of attacks. A particularly effective form of self-defense, however, promises WingTsun, a technique that primarily uses the one fast form of defense, “Blitz Defence”.

Blitz Defence: WingTsun

Very likely WingTsun, in German “Schöner Frühling”, was developed a good 250 years ago from the Chinese martial art Kung Fu by a Buddhist nun of the same name, in order to be able to defend themselves against male attackers.

Blitz Defence was developed out of WingTsun: as a special form of defense. The movements are mostly short and straight or implied spiral. A typical element of some Wing Chun styles is the chain fist strike, of which a practiced Wing Chun fighter performs 9 to 13 strikes per second.

Artistic looking techniques like kicks up to the head or complicated spins do not exist. Flowing movements and sudden speed merge in a systematic and coordinated sequence of movements and form a new powerful unit. A common training tool is a wooden dummy with several, one to three “arms” on which punching power, coordination, precision and speed can be trained.

Attack as defense

However, it takes a good six months to learn the technique. Then woman is ready to neutralize the opponent’s force by applying angle and rotation principles and use it against him. While a blow is repelled, an attack is made at the same moment – because: The attack is the defense. In role plays the women sharpen their perception and connect the WingTsun techniques with means of conflict resolution.

It is said that the systematic learning of WingTsun increases physical and mental flexibility and promotes the ability to perceive. The way there complement targeted relaxation and concentration techniques, as well as breathing exercises that refuel the body.

Giving children self-confidence

In the corresponding courses for children, the focus is not on hitting, but on strengthening the personality. Self-assertion and self-confidence are awakened and expanded in children.

After all, children who are confident and self-assured are hardly ever harassed or held against their will. The assertiveness courses also aim to sharpen the children’s perception of conflicts that arise and to show them rules of conduct for difficult situations.

Learning to say “no”

Even if children have learned effective defensive postures and hard hitting techniques, they should always try to avoid using fighting techniques where possible. This includes learning to “say no.” Children should recognize what they do not want and how to express this clearly to others. A prerequisite for this is to take one’s own feelings seriously and to be aware of boundaries.

The newly acquired self-confidence in the courses ensures that no victim signals are sent out and that it is therefore much less likely that women or children will be chosen as victims.
