Simeticon

Products

Simeticon (simethicone) is commercially available in the form of chewable tablets, as capsules, and as a solution. It has been registered in many countries since 1964. Since the effect is purely physical, medical products are also approved.

Structure and properties

Simeticone is obtained by incorporating 4 to 7 percent silica into polydimethylsiloxane with a degree of polymerization between 20 and 400. It exists as a viscous, grayish-white, opalescent liquid that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Simeticon (ATC A03AX13) has defoaming properties. It decreases intestinal foam formation by altering surface tension. It is chemically and biologically inert, is not absorbed or metabolized, and is excreted unchanged in the stool.

Indications for use

For the treatment of gas accumulation or gas formation in the digestive tract, i.e., for example, flatulence, bloating, and swallowed air. Simeticone is also used as an adjuvant, before diagnostic examinations of the digestive tract, and as an antidote in peroral poisoning with soaps.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Medications are usually taken with or after meals and at bedtime.
