Sleepwalking belongs to the group of parasomnias. They are phenomena that occur during sleep. They do not affect the quality of sleep or the restfulness of sleep. Sleep disorders are activities that a person performs at night from sleep.

Night terrors

With the night fear (Pavor nocturnus), it comes to the startle from the deep sleep. It begins with a loud scream, sitting up in bed with eyes wide open. In addition, sleepwalking can also occur. When the person calms down and falls asleep again, there is usually no memory of what happened.

Activities from sleep

There are activities from the bed, such as sitting up and looking around, pulling the blanket or examining the wall near the bed. When the bed is left, automated actions often occur. Therapeutic steps include information, securing the room, training the reactions of the surrounding area, observing sleep hygiene, relaxation exercises before going to bed, setting up formulas and taking psychotherapeutic measures.

Nightmares

Nightmares are strongly negative tinted dreams that lead to awakening. A distinction is made between distressing dreams and anxiety dreams. They have different causative factors, including genetic factors, personality dimensions, neuroticism, anxiety, stress, trauma, medication and maintaining factors such as cognitive avoidance. The therapy involves confrontation, coping with the nightmare situation and training the coping strategy.

REM sleep behavioral disorder

REM-sleep behavioral disorder leads to the expression of dreams. These are usually intense dreams with pronounced body movements. There are massive movements until leaving the bed.
