Sodium Deficiency (Hyponatremia): Complications

The following are the major diseases or complications that may be contributed to by hyponatremia (sodium deficiency):

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

  • Cephalgia (headache)
  • Serum hypoosmolarity – lowered osmotic pressure in the blood.
  • Volume deficiency

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Delir
  • Vomiting
  • Epilepsy (seizures)
  • Brain edema (swelling of the brain)
  • Lethargy (sleep addiction)
  • Coma (severe deep unconsciousness characterized by lack of response to address).
  • Somnolence (drowsiness with abnormal sleepiness).
  • Nausea (nausea)
  • Confusion

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Gait disorders
  • Muscle cramps
  • Oliguria (decreased urine volume with a daily maximum of 500 ml).

  • Increased hospital mortality – was associated with increased hospital mortality even in the absence of delirium.
