Magnesium tablets interaction

Depending on the type of drug, interactions may occur. Orally, magnesium should not be taken at the same time as antibiotics from the active substance group of aminoglycosides, tetracyclines or penicillins. They mutually prevent absorption into the bloodstream.

Magnesium should be taken at intervals of three to four hours to minimize the risk of poorer absorption. If you are taking iron tablets in addition, you must be careful, because the absorption of iron is also disturbed by magnesium. If you suffer from dysrhythmia and are taking antiarrhythmic drugs such as quinidine, you should not take magnesium medication.

If you are taking cardiac glycosides for an existing heart failure, isoniazid for tuberculosis or certain psychotropic drugs at the same time, the absorption of the above-mentioned drugs into the bloodstream is prolonged by magnesium. If there is a kidney dysfunction and laxatives, calcium-containing medication or potassium-saving dehydrating agents are also taken, magnesium can lead to an increase in the blood concentration of calcium and magnesium. If magnesium is injected into the vein, breathing activity may be inhibited if sleeping pills or anaesthetics have been administered at the same time. Magnesium injected into the vein increases the effect of antihypertensive drugs and muscle relaxants.
