Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Skin: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Actinic keratosis – cornification disorder of the skin caused by radiation-especially UV radiation (precancerous; risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma).
  • Arsenic keratosis – changes in the skin caused by chronic exposure to arsenic; this includes the yellowish discoloration and roughness and dryness.
  • Chronic eczema
  • Tinea corporis (synonym: ringworm) – dermatophytosis (infection with filamentous fungi) of the trunk and extremities (excluding feet, hands and groin).
  • Seborrheic keratosis (synonyms: seborrheic wart, age wart, verruca seborrhoica) – most common benign (benign) tumor of the skin. Initial cells of hyperplasia (proliferation) are keratinocytes.
  • Verruca vulgaris – “common wart”.

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48)

  • Amelanotic melanoma – unpigmented form of malignant melanoma (black skin cancer).
  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC; basal cell carcinoma) – malignant skin tumor that does not form metastases (daughter tumors).
  • Skin metastases from other tumors
  • Hidrocystoma – benign (benign) sagocorneal skin cysts of the apocrine or eccrine sweat glands of the face.
  • Keratoacanthoma – benign (benign) epithelial proliferation with central horny plug, which can regress spontaneously if left untreated (spontaneous remission).Macroscopically, keratoacanthomas are difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma and some forms of basal cell carcinoma, so excision followed by pathohistological processing (“fine tissue examination”) should be performed if spontaneous remission (unexpected improvement) does not occur.
  • Bowen’s disease – precancerous (cancer precursor) of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin; clinical picture: single sharply defined but irregularly shaped, broad red-scaly skin changes erythrosquamous or psoriasiform plaques (size varies from millimeters to decimeters); skin changes are similar to psoriasis (psoriasis), but usually occurs only a single focus.
  • Sebaceous gland adenoma
  • Trichilemmal tumor – a rare benign tumor of the scalp.

Ears – mastoid process (H60-H95).

  • Chondrodermatitis chronica helicis nodularis Winkler – painful ear nodules.
