A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

- Ophthalmological examination [due topossible secondary diseases: amblyopia (visual impairment)].
- Various vision tests and orthoptic tests to narrow down the form of strabismus and to rule out other eye diseases
- Ab and uncover test [concomitant strabismus, latent strabismus].
- Preferential-looking test
- Measuring the squint angle using the Maddox cross.
