Strabismus (Crossed Eyes): Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body weight, height; furthermore:
    • Inspection (viewing).
      • Skin and mucous membranes
      • Eyes [misalignment of the eyes (the eyes do not look in the same direction), burning of the eyes, trembling of the eyes, frequent blinking, tilting of the head]
  • Ophthalmological examination [due topossible secondary diseases: amblyopia (visual impairment)].
    • Various vision tests and orthoptic tests to narrow down the form of strabismus and to rule out other eye diseases
      • Ab and uncover test [concomitant strabismus, latent strabismus].
      • Preferential-looking test
      • Measuring the squint angle using the Maddox cross.
  • Health check

Square brackets [ ] indicate possible pathological (pathological) physical findings.
