Summary
The ankle fracture is one of the most common fractures of the lower extremity and often occurs as a result of twisting mechanisms or blows to the ankle. Most often the fibula and possibly the ligamentous connection between fibula and tibia is affected. The classification takes place according to Weber.
Slight fractures are often treated conservatively with immobilization and subsequent reconstruction therapy. More severe fractures are stabilized surgically. After immobilization, the stabilizing muscles are strengthened by coordination training.
In later stages, the use of therapy bands or a balance pad is recommended. Mobility also needs to be improved. There is a variety of exercises that should be practiced during therapy so that the patient can perform them independently at home.
