Symptoms on the thigh

The thigh is one of the more common locations for the presence of a torn muscle fibre. Different muscles can be affected. In addition to the femur, the thigh consists of 12 different muscles.

In addition to the extension and flexion of the leg at the knee joint, they also provide for a so-called adduction. Each muscle group can also be affected by a torn muscle fibre and cause different complaints. Often the adductors on the thigh are affected. In addition to the general symptoms of a torn muscle fiber, such as sudden stabbing pain, a “dent” and bruising at the affected area, it may be impossible or only possible with severe pain for the person affected to bend or stretch the leg at the knee or to move one leg towards the other against resistance. In certain sports (such as handball, soccer or tennis), a torn muscle fibre in the leg is particularly likely.

Symptoms on the calf

The calf consists of a number of muscles which are mainly responsible for the flexion of the foot and the flexion of the toes. A distinction can be made between the deep and superficial calf muscles. A torn muscle fibre usually affects the outer, stronger calf muscles (Musculus triceps surae) which can also be recognized externally as calf muscles.

If this muscle is affected by a torn muscle fiber, different symptoms occur, depending on the severity of the injury. Severe, stabbing pain dominates the torn muscle fiber, which can occur immediately or only after a few hours, depending on the severity of the injury (see above). Denting” as well as bruising and the inability to bend the foot or toes or a considerable loss of strength during movement also indicate the presence of a torn muscle fiber in the calf muscles.

In order to test whether the calf is affected by a torn muscle fiber, an attempt should be made to stand exclusively on the toes. This toe position is very painful or even impossible if a torn muscle fiber is present in the calf. The pain can occur immediately or only after a few hours, depending on its severity.
