Terbinafine cream has been approved in many countries since 1991 (Lamisil, generic).

Structure and properties

Terbinafine (C21H25N, Mr = 291.43 g/mol) is present in the drug as terbinafine hydrochloride, a white crystalline powder that is sparingly soluble in water. It belongs structurally to the allylamines.

Effects

Terbinafine (ATC D01AE15) has fungistatic to fungicidal properties against cutaneous fungi, mold fungi, and Candida. It inhibits ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting squalene epoxidase. This leads to intracellular accumulation of squalene. Terbinafine is lipophilic and distributes well into the skin and nails.

Indications

For the treatment of athlete’s foot and other fungal skin infections (dermatophytes, pityriasis versicolor, ).

Dosage

According to the professional information. The cream is applied once or twice daily for one to two weeks, depending on the indication.

Contraindications
