The alternatives to Vitamin A eye ointment
For dry eyes, other ointments can be used to moisturize the eye. For example, ointments containing heparin can be used, as they stabilize the tear film and thus have a protective effect. In addition, heparin has a long period of adhesion and can thus contribute to cell regeneration.
Bepanthen ointment has similar properties and can help in treatment. Besides the ointment, eye drops can also be used. Preparations containing hyaluronic acid are recommended here.
Hyaluronic acid is an endogenous substance that can bind water and thus strengthen the tear film. Eye drops containing the herbal remedy Euphrasia (eyebright) can also provide relief. In addition, it is recommended to follow general measures. One should drink enough water, air regularly and avoid noxious substances like tobacco smoke. If you wear contact lenses, you should not leave them in your eye longer than necessary.
Is application possible during pregnancy and lactation?
In principle, the application is possible during pregnancy, as the vitamin A in the ointment is low-dosed and only works locally, i.e. on the eye. However, one should be aware that vitamin A is teratogenic – it has a toxic effect on the unborn child and can lead to severe malformations. Vitamin A is also harmful to an infant.
But for these side effects to occur, vitamin A must be available in high doses, otherwise it cannot act systemically in the body’s circulation. It must also be mentioned that every body reacts differently to the substances and metabolises them differently. If you have known sensitivities to vitamin A and you are pregnant or breastfeeding, its use is definitely not recommended.
In general, it is advisable to consult a physician and get advice before using vitamin A ointments. Especially during pregnancy the body is very sensitive and should not be unnecessarily burdened.
