Sulfacetamide is commercially available as an eye ointment (blephamide + prednisolone acetate). In the United States, sulfacetamide is a common agent for the external treatment of rosacea (e.g., Rosanil) and acne, often in combination with sulfur.
Structure and properties
Sulfacetamide (C8H10N2O3S, Mr = 214.2 g/mol) is present in drugs in the form of the sodium salt sulfacetamide sodium, a white crystalline powder that is readily soluble in water.
Effects
Sulfacetamide (ATC S01CA02) has bacteriostatic properties.
Indications
Superficial sulfacetamide-sensitive ocular infections: Blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, conjunctivitis. In the United States: acne, rosacea (external).
