The duration
The duration/prognosis of heart stumbles depends on the triggering cause. In many patients it is completely harmless. The duration varies greatly.
It can occur once – after certain trigger factors – but can also recur at irregular intervals. In patients with structural heart disease, such as coronary heart disease or cardiomyopathies, the prognosis depends strongly on the underlying disease. In most cases, it is relatively good, thanks to current therapeutic options.
The course of the disease
The course of the disease in heart stumbles during sports is very different. In some patients it occurs only once, for example after a night on watch or excessive coffee consumption. In others, it occurs repeatedly, but causes hardly any discomfort, while others find it very disturbing.
In patients with pre-existing heart disease, the heart stumbling can occur repeatedly and may also increase in intensity. Therefore, it is important for people with heart disease to consult their physician before engaging in sports activities. He or she can give advice on which sports are suitable and which may involve a risk.
