Therapy | Abdominal pain: What helps?

Therapy

The specific treatment of abdominal pain depends on the diagnosis. In very many cases, however, it is helpful if the patient lies down and spares himself. The basic therapy here should consist of rest and protection as well as sufficient warmth (e.g. through a hot water bottle) on the abdomen.

Also a sufficient drinking supply (preferably tea or water) and a simple diet (rusk) should help the patient sufficiently. If this basic therapy does not help or if the pain gets worse, it is important to consult a doctor so that he can determine the exact cause. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the patient must have an operation and the germinating germ must be removed, as the growth leads to a rupture of the fallopian tube.

As a result, the unborn baby also dies. If the cause of the abdominal pain is an inflammation of the ovaries, prostate, bladder, intestines or appendix, a therapy can be performed with or, as recommended for appendicitis, a surgical therapy in which the appendix is removed. Also polyps or fibroids in the uterus, endometriosis, varicose veins in the pelvis or testicular torsion should definitely be treated surgically so that abdominal pain can be successfully treated.

In the case of an irritable bowel, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease or an intolerance, there are no specific remedies that can help the patient. In these cases, a healthy and balanced diet and the avoidance of harmful foods is recommended. Whether an inguinal hernia or a herniated disc is treated surgically or with medication depends on the severity of the problem and must be decided individually for each patient.

Prophylaxis

To avoid abdominal pain, it is especially important that the patient allows himself moments of rest again and again. A relaxing bath can be very helpful, especially for patients with menstrual pain, so that the patient can relax again and the abdominal pain becomes more bearable. A sufficient drinking intake and a balanced and healthy diet also help to prevent or even avoid intestinal or bladder diseases.Above all, a sufficient drinking supply of about 2 liters of water per day can ensure that germs do not enter the bladder through the urethra and thus cannot lead to cystitis and abdominal pain.

A Chlamydia infection can be prevented by the patient always using condoms and thus not being able to take up germs. There is no specific prophylaxis for each of the causes that can lead to abdominal pain. Nevertheless, a healthy lifestyle can help the patient to minimize and prevent abdominal pain.
