Therapy | Pain in the middle of the upper abdomen

Therapy

The treatment of upper abdominal pain that occurs in the middle of the abdomen varies depending on the causative disease. In most cases, the pain is caused by inflammation of the stomach lining. In case of an acute inflammation, the diet should be changed to a light diet.

Several small, well-tolerated meals are better for the patient and are gentler on the affected mucous membrane than several large portions per day. Foods such as rusk or gruel are recommended in such an inflammation. To relieve the pain, antispasmodic medication can be prescribed. To prevent further damage to the mucous membrane, acid inhibitors are prescribed to reduce the production of acid gastric juice.

If the pain in the middle of the upper abdomen is caused by an inflammation of the gastric mucosa caused by certain bacteria (Helicobacter pylori), additional antibiotic therapy must be administered. Pain in the middle of the upper abdomen caused by inflammation of the pancreas is treated in hospital. After a temporary food leave, the diet should also be changed to a light diet.

Care must be taken to ensure an adequate fluid intake. An antibiotic therapy is administered medically. For other serious causes of central upper abdominal pain, invasive methods can also be used for proper treatment.

Prognosis

The prognosis for central upper abdominal pain can be very different. If they are caused by the two most common causes, such as inflammation of the stomach lining or pancreas, the prognosis is very good. With the right therapy, complete recovery is achieved in almost all cases. Overall, however, the prognosis depends not only on the cause but also on a quick diagnosis and a correctly initiated therapy.
