These home remedies can help

Many simple household remedies can help against the symptoms of a cold. The most important thing with a cold is a high intake of liquid. Herbal teas can be a good alternative to water.

A high intake of liquid is therefore important, as otherwise the mucous membranes can dry out and further germs can more easily settle on dry mucous membranes. However, you should keep away from ginger, as it can promote contractions. A nasal spray with common salt can be used to combat blocked noses and pressure in the paranasal sinuses.

The common salt causes the mucous membranes to swell, thus reducing the pressure in the sinus area. Steam baths are also recommended to reduce swelling and moisten the nasal and pharyngeal region. These can be mixed with either table salt or thyme, for example.

If you are sensitive to allergies or have asthma, inhalation should only be done with table salt and not with other herbs. An increased intake of zinc (for example contained in oat flakes or pumpkin seeds) and vitamin C (e.g. citrus fruits) provides the immune system with important trace elements so that it can work effectively and is therefore also recommended.Cold teas are useful in case of a cold during pregnancy to maintain a high liquid intake. However, caution is advised when selecting the ingredients.

However, the following principle also applies: the dose makes the poison. For many of the negative effects of medicinal plants or herbs, a high dose of them must be taken. Good and harmless options are for example chamomile, fennel, lemon balm, thyme or any kind of fruit tea.

Homeopathy

For colds, homeopathy knows many different remedies, which are adapted to the different symptoms. During pregnancy, medicines should generally be handled with care and so should homeopathy. There is no good scientific basis for how homeopathic remedies for colds can possibly affect mother or baby. Therefore, a doctor with a good knowledge of homeopathy should always be consulted before taking a preparation.
