Tixocortolpivalate is commercially available in combination with neomycin as a nasal spray (Pivalone). It has been approved in many countries since 1986.
Structure and properties
Tixocortolpivalate (C21H30O4S, Mr = 378.5 g/mol) is a 21-thiosteroid.
Effects
Tixocortolpivalate (ATC R01AD07) has anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties. The effects are due to binding to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors.
Indications
In fixed combination with neomycin for the treatment of bacterial infections associated with diseases of the nasal mucosa, for example, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, and nasal polyps.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Usually given one to two sprays into each nostril two to four times daily. See also under Administering nasal sprays.

Interactions
Drug-drug interactions have not been studied in detail. Tixocortol pivalate is metabolized in the liver.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as irritation, stinging, dry nose, and allergic reactions such as allergic contact dermatitis.
