Ultrasonic devices
The use of brushes, pastes and cleaning tablets removes the soft plaque and food residues, but this is only very limited for tartar. This can only be removed by the use of ultrasonic devices/removal. It is a cleaning bath of water and soap, in which the dentures are placed.
The ultrasound produces a multitude of tiny bubbles, whose bursting generates pressure waves that break off the tartar. Such devices are also used by opticians to clean lenses and by jewelers to clean jewelry. The proper cleaning of a dental prosthesis is of enormous importance.
Both partial and full dentures can be damaged by deposits of dirt particles and plaque. In addition, improperly maintained dentures often show unsightly discolorations that are difficult to remove. In order to avoid the necessity of making a new denture, which usually costs several hundred Euros, the cleaning of dentures with the ultrasonic device has proven to be a good solution.
A complete denture cleaning with the use of ultrasound can be done in most dental offices or dental laboratories. Some manufacturers also offer compact ultrasonic devices for cleaning dentures at home. However, the quality of denture cleaning using such home devices is controversial.
With the help of the ultrasonic device, first soft and then even hard coatings can be removed from the surface of the prosthesis. Even stubborn tea, coffee or nicotine deposits can be reliably removed by using ultrasound. In order for this type of denture cleaning to take place, the removable denture must be placed in a special bath.
The smallest vibrations create vacuum bubbles within the rinsing solution. When several of these bubbles collide, a pressure wave is formed which “blows” hard deposits off the surface of the prosthesis. In addition, bacterial pathogens can also be carefully killed and removed in this way.
Directly after cleaning the denture, the special cleaning solution should be rinsed off the denture material. For this purpose it is sufficient to carefully brush the denture under clear, running water. For older dentures it is also advisable to smooth and polish their surface at regular intervals.
Experience has shown that a denture with a surface as smooth as possible is perceived as less disturbing by the wearer. Furthermore, the number of bacterial pathogens on the removable denture is reduced by regular treatment of the denture material. The cleaning of the prosthesis with the help of the ultrasonic device should be done at least once a year.
Since the time required for this procedure is relatively short, cleaning can usually be conveniently performed in addition to the annual check-up. The most careful cleaning of dentures is carried out by the dentist or dental professional. Therefore, the dentist should be consulted from time to time to have the prosthesis thoroughly cleaned. In addition to removing tartar by cleaning with ultrasound, dentures that have become dull are polished again and any minor damage is repaired. Afterwards the denture is as new again.
