Cleaning of prostheses with vinegar

Vinegar can also be used to clean the dentures. Vinegar essence is suitable, but as a diluted solution with water. It is important to use white or clear vinegar, as the other vinegar products contain dyes that can discolor the prosthesis.

The ratio between vinegar and water should be 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water. Undiluted vinegar is too strong and corrosive, so it could damage the acrylic. The purpose of using vinegar is to remove food residues and possible tartar on the denture.

As in citric acid, many different substances dissolve or at least detach from the plastic. One should put the denture into the vinegar bath for 20-30 minutes at the most and never “soak” it overnight. Coarse tartar can be loosened or decalcified with the vinegar and then removed under water with a toothbrush, just like a calcified tap.

Unfortunately, brushing with a toothbrush cannot be replaced by this vinegar bath. If there are no food or plaque remains on the denture, bacteria, fungi and viruses can no longer grow. Unlike toothpastes, which contain abrasive ingredients, vinegar does not roughen the surface of the denture and does not wear out the white denture teeth. If the denture still cannot be completely cleaned, it is recommended to have it professionally cleaned by a dentist or dental technician.

Cleaning of prostheses with baking powder

For coarse cleaning and removal of discoloration you can additionally try to remove the dentures with baking powder. To do this, take a teaspoon of baking powder and dissolve it in a glass of water. The dentures can be placed in it – but not longer than 20 minutes, since baking powder can also attack the plastic.

In addition, this method should only be used once a week at most. Afterwards the prosthesis must be rinsed thoroughly with water. Scrubbing with a toothbrush is not recommended, as the baking powder can get into small grooves.

If you want to avoid the resulting unpleasant taste, you should rinse the denture thoroughly with water and then put it in a water glass with drops of taste if necessary. The denture teeth will not become whiter as a result. The acrylic cannot be made lighter, it can only be cleaned.
