Complete urologic screening includes a package of individual examinations designed for early detection of cancer in men.
The procedure
In principle, statutory cancer screening in men from the age of 45 consists only of an annual:
- Inspection (viewing) and palpation (palpation) of the external genitalia.
- Digital rectal examination (DRU; examination of the prostate by means of a finger through the intestine).
- Palpation examination of the regional lymph nodes
The cancer thus palpated is usually already in a very advanced stage. To ensure a truly early, effective cancer prevention, a number of other examinations should be performed to ensure a successful cure.
These examinations include various ultrasound examinations such as ultrasound of the kidneys (renal sonography), the urinary bladder and the prostate – so-called transrectal prostate sonography (TRUS; synonym: transrectal ultrasound) – and, if necessary, examination of the testicles, penis and ureter. These are the organs that can be affected by cancer in the urological area.
The prostate-specific antigen, the so-called PSA value, is also determined by a blood sample as part of the complete urological screening examination, as this can indicate prostate cancer.
A comprehensive urinalysis, for example, can detect blood that is not necessarily visible in the urine as an important clue to bladder, ureter or kidney cancer.
Other examinations – such as the i.v. pyelogram (urography; X-ray contrast imaging of the kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder) or the NMP22 urinary bladder cancer test – can be performed as part of the complete urological screening examination and can be useful in ruling out cancer.
The complete urologic examination for cancer screening is required
