Neither weight loss nor weight gain are typical symptoms of lactose intolerance. However, there are people who report that they gain weight as part of their lactose intolerance and those who have lost weight underneath. Whether this is related to the intolerance is rather questionable.

Sweating

It is possible that increased sweating may also play a role during the symptoms that occur after the intake of lactose in people with lactose intolerance. Flatulence and diarrhoea put the body under stress, which can lead to increased sweating. However, sweating is not a typical symptom of lactose intolerance.

Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is not a symptom that occurs in the context of lactose intolerance. However, shortness of breath can occur in some allergic diseases such as allergic bronchial asthma. If shortness of breath occurs repeatedly, you should first try to find out how it relates to any possible triggers.

Has anything specific been eaten before? Has there been contact with potential allergens such as pollen, animal hair or similar? A doctor should then be consulted, who can carry out further diagnostics.

Tiredness

Fatigue is a symptom that can occur in many diseases. It can also play a role in lactose intolerance. In order to avoid the occurrence of increased fatigue in the context of lactose intolerance, either products containing lactose should be avoided or tablets containing the missing enzyme for lactose splitting should be taken.

Inner restlessness

Restlessness can also be an accompanying symptom after the intake of lactose, provided there is a lactose intolerance. However, it is not a typical symptom.

How can I relieve the symptoms?

The best way to avoid the symptoms of lactose intolerance is to avoid dairy products or products that contain a lot of lactose. Alternatively, there are tablets that contain the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the milk sugar and is not present in sufficient quantities in lactose intolerant products. If the tablets are taken in time before a lactose-containing meal, the symptoms are significantly reduced.

If lactose has already been taken, there is little that can be done about the symptoms. A hot-water bottle or a cherry pit cushion helps against the abdominal pain for many of those affected.
