What can be done to prevent hallux valgus?

Many external factors play a role in the development of hallux valgus. Wearing the wrong shoes is the leading factor. Therefore, comfortable shoes that do not constrict the toes too much should be worn.

Those who suffer from other foot malpositions, such as a flat splay foot, should wear insoles in their shoes; this can have a preventive effect on hallux valgus. Since weakening the muscles in the foot often also contributes to hallux valgus, the prevention of hallux valgus can be supplemented by muscle training. For this purpose you should run barefoot a lot. Exercises such as repeatedly walking on tiptoe or spreading the big toe can also strengthen the muscles.

Prognosis Hallux valgus

Basically, it should be noted that with correct diagnosis and appropriate choice of the surgical procedure, the long-term prognosis of the operated hallux valgus is good. It is important that the correct surgical procedure is used for the individual case of hallux valgus. If no advanced arthrosis is visible in the base joint of the big toe, a joint-preserving surgical procedure (e.g. Chevron or Mc Bride etc.)

should be used. In many studies, the results are good to very good in over 90 percent of patients. In each of the above-mentioned forefoot correction surgeries, prolonged inability to work or exercise must be expected.

The patient is often not sufficiently informed about this. For procedures with bone correction, a period of between 3-6 months should be assumed. From a socio-medical point of view, this can be a major problem.

The successful treatment of forefoot complaints such as hallux valgus also requires close cooperation with an orthopedic technician. It is therefore advantageous if an experienced orthopedic technician can be consulted at any time during a foot consultation. From a practical point of view, such cooperation is only possible at foot surgery centers.
