When do you need antibiotics? | Wound healing disorder on the tooth

When do you need antibiotics?

Antibiotic administration is indicated if a wound is infected. In this case a smear is taken from the wound to see which bacteria cause the wound healing disorder. Then the appropriate antibiotic can be selected and administered.

Prophylaxis

Especially after a dental operation, you can prevent a wound healing disorder with simple measures: Refrain from cigarettes, pipes or cigars. In the first days after the operation, you should cool your face regularly. Cooling packs or ice packs, for example, are suitable for this.

During the first days of the healing phase, you should avoid acidic drinks (e.g. fruit juices), alcohol and strong coffee if possible. Pay attention to thorough oral hygiene. Spare the area of the wound and use a softer toothbrush if necessary.

  • In the course of natural healing, a yellowish coating on the wound develops at times.

Many affected persons mistakenly confuse this coating with pus and remove it. In the ideal case, the wound should not be touched with the fingers. Children in particular find this particularly difficult!

Duration of healing

The duration of healing is always longer than the normal healing period in case of a wound healing disorder. The more massive the inflammation is, the longer the healing time is, since the inflammation is first fought before the wound can heal. Wound healing disorders caused by the use of medication must be considered separately, as some medication means that a wound cannot heal at all without surgical coverage. These include drugs for treating osteoporosis, which intervene in bone metabolism and make bacterially infected bone even more difficult to heal.
