Which foods are recommended?

In the case of heartburn, it is advisable to select the right foods. Each person reacts differently to the food contained in the diet. Nevertheless, numerous stomach-friendly, inexpensive foods can be distinguished in the case of heartburn:

  • Whole grain products (bread, rice, noodles)
  • Potatoes
  • Low-acid fruit (including bananas, grapes, strawberries)
  • Salad (without vinegar), vegetables (including carrots, cucumber, spinach)
  • Low-fat oils and fats (including olive oil, rapeseed oil, linseed oil)
  • Non-carbonated beverages and fruit acid (still water, tea)
  • Low fat fish and meat products
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Dried herbs

Which foods should be avoided?

At the same time, there are also numerous unfavorable foods in the context of heartburn. These lead to a more frequent occurrence of the complaints and via an increased production of stomach acid to an increased intensity of the complaints. Often these are foods that contain or supply additional acid:

  • Citrus fruits (including lemons, oranges, mandarins, limes, grapefruit)
  • Tomatoes, raw onions
  • Minced beef, chicken nuggets, spicy chicken wings
  • Sour cream, milkshake, ice cream
  • Chips, mashed potatoes, potato salad
  • Alcohol, coffee, orange juice, grapefruit juice, lemonade
  • Pungent spices
  • Smoked goods

Which spices should be avoided?

Often the complaints are also attributed to the food, although the spices used for the preparation are responsible for the complaints. Spices, which often lead to an increase in heartburn, are one of them:

  • Hot spices (like chili peppers, curry powder, pepper)
  • Fresh garlic
  • Fatty mayonnaise
  • Mustard

An example of nutrition

In order to illustrate more clearly what an appropriate diet for chronic heartburn can look like, we have created a few nutritional examples for you here.

  • It is best to start the day with a lukewarm glass of water, which should be drunk slowly. For breakfast, you can choose from a variety of cereals, including oatmeal, nuts, seeds and/or fruit.

Bananas, apricots, apples and pears are particularly suitable for this, since they are quite low in acid. Finished muesli, on the other hand, usually contains a lot of sugar and should therefore be avoided. An alternative to muesli is finely ground wholemeal bread with cream cheese.

Buckwheat pancakes are also a good breakfast, as buckwheat flour is an alkaline food. A herbal tea can be drunk with it.

  • For lunch, salad can be recommended in any case. With the help of lean meat it can be easily refined.

Alternatively, all kinds of vegetable-based dishes are conceivable, for example a vegetable casserole. There is nothing wrong with lean meat from time to time. How about a pollack fillet or mashed potatoes and cooked sausages?

Soups and vegetable stews should not be ignored either.

  • Apples, especially the milder varieties, are very suitable as a snack between large meals. Also conceivable here would be nut mixtures, fruit salads or light sandwiches.
  • For dinner, for example, jacket potatoes with quark, wholemeal spaghetti or simply wholemeal bread with cheese and a salad can be eaten. Make sure, however, not to eat too much meat in the evening and not to eat anything at all just before going to bed. These two rules will pay off the next day.
