White shaking mixture PM (Suspensio alba cutanea aquosa PM 1593) is not registered as a finished drug. It can be prepared in pharmacies and retailers can also obtain it from specialized suppliers.

Ingredients

A Bentonite 2.0
B Zinc oxide 15.0
C Talk 15.0
D Propylene glycol 15.0
E Purified water 53.0

The bentonite, zinc oxide, and talc are mixed and given an antimicrobial treatment in a drying oven at 180°C for 30 minutes. The propylene glycol and water are then added to the cooled powder mixture. Process with a whisk to a suspension. The exact preparation instructions can be found in the PM and more recent formularies such as the DMS. An updated version has been published in the Formularium Helveticum (Zinci suspensio pastosa FH). The suspension is in the form of a white liquid. Other active ingredients such as menthol or disinfectants can be added to it. Glycerol is also used instead of propylene glycol.

Effects

The suspension (ATC D02AB) is believed to have cooling, drying, astringent, antipruritic, mild antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications for use

The drug is used for acute, inflamed, itchy, dry to slightly weeping skin conditions, such as chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, intertrigo, and eczema.

Dosage

The suspension is for external use and must be shaken well before use. It is applied two to three times daily and allowed to dry. A brush or cotton pad may be used for administration if necessary.

Contraindications

The suspension is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity and open wounds and should not be used on the eye. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs are not known. Several incompatibilities are known.

Adverse effects

Adverse effects are hardly known. Allergic reactions are possible, especially to active ingredients and excipients added to the drug.
