What are the costs of removing varicose veins?

The cost of removing varicose veins depends on several factors. On the one hand, there are several different methods, each of which has a different level of complexity and therefore also different costs. In addition, the factors affecting the patient are decisive.

Some patients have only mild varicose veins, while others have an advanced stage, which leads to an increase in effort and thus to an increase in costs. When comparing the usual treatment methods, vein stripping (pulling varicose veins) is usually the most cost-effective alternative. Since these are basically always covered by health insurance, no exact statement can be made about the amount.

The other methods such as laser or radio wave treatment must be paid more often by the patient and the costs are usually between 800 and 2000€. In the case of medically diagnosed varicose vein conditions for which there is medical justification for treatment, both statutory and private health insurance companies usually cover the costs. However, in the case of those with statutory health insurance, usually only classic vein stripping is covered as the most proven and cost-effective method.

For private patients, the costs of other methods such as laser treatment can also be covered in some cases. In this case, one should inquire with the health insurance company in advance. In addition, the costs for the removal of varicose veins, which are not medically relevant, are generally not covered.

This is the case, for example, if only so-called “spider veins” are present. These are dilations of the smallest skin veins that can precede a varicose vein condition. However, if varicose veins are beginning or threatening to develop, the health insurance company usually pays the cost of compression stockings.
