Stress as a cause of polyneuropathy

Causes of polyneuropathy in the legs

In most cases polyneuropathy occurs at the beginning in the nerve endings. On the legs, polyneuropathy is characterized by muscle weakness or cramps. Patients with alcoholic or diabetic PNP are often affected by such symptoms.

These symptoms are called burning feet or restless legs. Particularly in alcoholics, atrophy, i.e. the breakdown of the calf muscles, is noticeable as a result of damage to the motor nerves of the legs. Polyneuropathy often occurs symmetrically in alcoholics.

In severe cases, the paralysis of the peripheral nerves can also restrict standing and walking ability. The paralysis results in a typical broad-based, uncertain gait pattern. On the legs, the symptoms occur more quickly due to the hydrostatic effect on the metabolism.
