Craniomandibular Dysfunction: Stress

It is now demonstrably recognized that psychological factors play a major role in the development of CMD. Many patients are permanently under stress, the fear for the job, too little money, private problems in the partnership or overload by job and family. Often these problems remain unspoken, they are suppressed. But the body forgets nothing and looks for a way to compensate for the psychological stress. Often this happens through a generally increased basic muscle activity, of particular dental importance is an increased activity of the head and chewing muscles. Parafunctions, such as nocturnal teeth grinding or clenching, arise as compensation mechanisms for unexplained problems and overstress.
