There are no drugs containing fenbufen on the market in many countries. Brand names include Cinopal and Lederfen, for example.

Structure and properties

Fenbufen (C16H14O3, Mr = 254.3 g/mol) exists as a white, fine, crystalline powder that is very sparingly soluble in water. It is a biphenyl derivative and belongs to the propionic acid derivatives. Fenbufen is a prodrug that is biotransformed to the active metabolite felbinac (biphenylacetic acid), among others.

Effects

Fenbufen (ATC M01AE05) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by the active metabolite.

Indications

For the treatment of pain and inflammatory disorders.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Medicines are usually taken twice daily.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal discomfort.
