Diabetic Retinopathy: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Eyes and ocular appendages (H00-H59).

  • Retinopathia pigmentosa – congenital disease with gradual destruction of the retina.
  • Retinopathia praematurorum – retinal damage in premature births.
  • Retinopathy due to eclampsia – retinal damage due to a condition occurring during pregnancy with edema (water retention), proteinuria (increased excretion of protein in the urine) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Retinopathy due to hypertension – retinal damage caused by high blood pressure.

Medication

  • Interferon – drug used for immune stimulation; commonly used for therapy of hepatitis C (liver inflammation).
  • Tamoxifen – antiestrogen (substances that inhibit the female sex hormone), which is used in the therapy of mammary carcinoma (breast cancer), can cause visual disturbances
