Tuaminoheptane is commercially available in combination with acetylcysteine in the form of a nasal spray (rinofluimucil). It has been approved in many countries since 1990.
Structure and properties
Tuaminoheptane (C7H17N, Mr = 115.2 g/mol) is a primary amine.
Effects
Tuaminoheptane (ATC R01AA11, ATC R01AB08) has sympathomimetic, vasoconstrictor, and decongestant properties. It facilitates breathing and stops runny nose.
Indications
Tuaminoheptane is used for symptomatic treatment of inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis, rhinitis), sinusitis, and inflammation of the nasal cavity and sinuses after surgical procedures.
Abbrach
Tuaminoheptane can be abused as a doping agent and is on the doping list.
Dosage
According to the package insert. The spray is usually applied 3-4 times daily. See also under Administering nasal sprays.

- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Treatment with an MAO inhibitor

Interactions
According to the drug label, no interactions are known to date. In case of overdose, interactions with other sympathomimetics could occur.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local nasal reactions such as dry nasal mucosa and irritation. Prolonged use of decongestant nasal sprays may result in rhinitis medicamentosa. Systemic side effects such as headache or palpitations are considered rare.
