Products
In many countries, no finished medicinal products containing alfatradiol are commercially available. In Germany, preparations for external use are available (e.g., Ell-Cranell).
Structure and properties
Alfatradiol (C18H24O2, Mr = 272.4 g/mol) or 17α-estradiol is a stereoisomer of the female sex hormone 17β-estradiol.
Effects
Alfatradiol inhibits the enzyme 5α-reductase, thereby inhibiting the synthesis of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from testosterone. DHT plays a role in the development of inherited hair loss. Unlike 17β-estradiol, alfatradiol has virtually no estrogenic effects.
Indications
For the treatment of hair loss:
- Androgenetic alopecia in men
- Androgenetic alopecia in women
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. The solution is usually applied locally once a day. After improvement of symptoms, the solution can be administered only every second or third day.
Contraindications
Alfatradiol is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, during pregnancy and lactation, and in persons under 18 years of age. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
There are no known drug-drug interactions.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include a burning sensation, redness and itching of the scalp, and greasy hair. These side effects are mainly due to the excipients.
