Products
Amikacin is commercially available as a solution for injection (Amikin). It has been approved in many countries since 1976.
Structure and properties
Amikacin (C22H43N5O13, Mr = 585.6 g/mol) is semisynthetically prepared from kanamycin A. It is found in drugs as amikacin sulfate, a white powder that is readily soluble in water.
Effects
Amikacin (ATC J01GB06) has bactericidal properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. The effects are based on binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. This interferes with protein synthesis.
Indications
For short-term treatment of bacterial infectious diseases with susceptible pathogens.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drug is mainly injected as an intravenous or intramuscular injection.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Adverse effects
The most common potential adverse effects include oto- and nephrotoxicity. Amikacin may cause hearing loss, balance disturbances, and a reduction in renal function.
